Like many other seasoned ice fishing enthusiasts, Mack’s Pro Staffers, Bobby and Robin Shindelar look forward to the thrill of the catch and the serenity of a frozen landscape. As seasoned ice fishing experts, the Sindelar’s have often shared their knowledge and techniques for effectively targeting yellow perch through the ice in episodes of the NW Outdoorsmen and others.
Whether aiming for the football-sized giants of Lake Cascade in Idaho or the plentiful schools in Curlew Lake in Washington, understanding perch behavior and using the right techniques and tackle are key to a successful day on the ice.
Thank you, Robin for sending us these great photos of your recent fishing trip.
Yellow perch can be abundant throughout the interior of the Pacific Northwest, inhabiting many freshwater lakes that are still accessible during the winter months. These fish are a great species to target, for families, newcomers, and young anglers, providing non-stop action that is both engaging and educational. The key to a successful day of ice fishing for perch is locating the schools. During winter, these fish tend to gather in tight groups, making it possible to catch several in a short amount of time.
In the early ice season, perch are often found in shallow bay areas where they feed on insects among the weeded bottoms. As the season progresses, they move to deeper waters, holding on points and drop-off ledges. Unlike their distant relative, the walleye, perch do not exclusively hug the lake floor. They can vary from one foot off the bottom to suspending near the ice surface. Starting near the bottom and working up the water column until the school is located is a proven strategy that ice fishing experts recommend.
To locate perch, try drilling multiple holes in a crisscross pattern over an area of approximately 40 yards. This methodically covers different depths and potential hiding spots. Starting with the hole closest to shallow water is key, as perch often move between depths in search of food.
To catch the perch in the photo above, Robin used the small spoon, Mack's Lure Sonic BaitFish in a 1/16 oz. size. Tipping this lure with maggots, mealworms, or even cocktail shrimp, is an excellent way to get the day started. This setup not only mimics the natural prey of perch but also provides the flash and movement needed to draw perch, lethargic from winter cold, to strike.
Once an active feeding group is found, switching tactics can maintain the bite. The Mack's Lure Glo Hook is particularly effective when illuminated with a cell phone light, creating a glow that lasts up to 20 minutes underwater. This glowing presentation captivates perch by mimicking prey in low-light conditions. For perch near the bottom, slapping the presentation on the lake bed stirs up silt, simulating a feeding frenzy that attracts fish. Maintaining a consistent jigging cadence is crucial, and anglers shouldn't hesitate to let an interested perch chase the lure up the water column. Slowly jigging and reeling simultaneously can entice nibbling perch to commit to a bite
The Sonic BaitFish is a favorite for catching jumbo perch. Designed with a unique shape and reflective finish, this lure is known for its ability to mimic the movement and flash of small baitfish, a primary food source for perch. The Sonic BaitFish can be jigged vertically, a technique that involves lifting and dropping the lure to create vibrations and a darting motion that attract perch from a distance. Its versatility allows it to be used in various jigging styles, whether it's a slow and steady lift or a rapid, jerky motion. This adaptability is crucial when dealing with perch that may be reluctant to strike, as changing the jigging action can provoke a reaction bite.
Pro ice anglers often use perch eyeballs as bait to further trigger the bite among lethargic fish. This natural bait can be incredibly effective because it not only provides a familiar scent and taste but also adds a visual element that can entice fish.
PRO TIP: The combination of the Glo Hook and perch eyeballs can be particularly potent, as the glow draws the fish in, and the natural bait seals the deal. This method can be especially useful during periods when perch are less active and require an extra incentive to strike.
The white, flaky meat of perch is perfect for delicious fish tacos, adding a culinary reward to the day's efforts. This is a great option when your boat is winterized and you still have a hankering to get out and feel the excitement of getting on the bite.
We recommend these videos if you want to learn more about the rewarding pursuit of fishing for yellow perch through the ice. With the right techniques and tools, you will be able to reel in these delicious panfish. Whether at Lake Cascade, Curlew Lake, or any other perch-rich waters, the adventure awaits those willing to brave the cold to enjoy the rewards that come with ice fishing.
Bobby Schindelar tied the record for the largest perch caught. In 2012, he reeled in a 16-inch, 2.6-pound perch out of the frozen Lake Cascade.
Shindelar's perch beats the record in terms of length -- the co-record holder, caught in 1976, measured 15.5 inches, while Shindelar's measured 16 inches. Length is a non-factor in determining the state record, however, and Shindelar's 2.6-pounder will be listed as a tie.
Shindelar reeled the perch in using a tip up with a four-pound test. At first, Shindelar said, he thought he had hooked a trout, but a flash of gold just below the surface confirmed he had a big yellow.
"I was like 'holy cow!' It looked like a giant gold fish," Shindelar said.
