Now that winter has set in and several lakes are covered in thick ice, it is time to go ice fishing. It’s a fantastic way to spend the few hours of daylight we have and catch some fresh fish for dinner. It does not take much gear and there is no need to worry about washing the boat once you are done.

Previously a sport dominated by anglers in the Midwest and Canada, ice fishing in the inland Pacific Northwest has boomed in recent years thanks to its reputation as a fun winter activity for the entire family, as well as the vast number of accessible lakes in the region.

Many of you have been asking what we have been using to successfully target kokanee through the ice fishing in British Columbia, so today I’m going to take you through the dodgers and lures we are using to get on these fish.

To answer the question to the title of this month’s article, I feel that there is no better month to fish for kokanee than September. In addition, a Sonic BaitFish™ (SBF) is the lure that has the potential to catch the most kokanee by vertical jigging!
