January has arrived, signaling that ice season is officially on. Across North Central Washington, hardwater anglers are ready for an exciting month on the ice. Both seasoned competitors and first-timers will find something to enjoy as January offers great experiences for all winter fishing enthusiasts. Many dedicated ice anglers are already heading to high-elevation lakes. They are dialing in techniques and testing gear before major tournaments. For those new to the sport, now is a great time to start.

Several upcoming events will include experienced anglers and Mack’s Lure Pro-staff. These experts will share tips, tactics, and proven setups that can make learning faster and more rewarding.
“We’re excited to be part of these events and to get products out to the organizers,” says Mack’s Lure. “It’s a great way to support the ice fishing community and help anglers succeed.”
Kicking things off is the 22nd Annual Ice Fishing Festival at Sidley Lake near Molson, Washington. Hosted by the Oroville Chamber of Commerce alongside the hardworking Molson Grange crew who keep the hall warm and welcoming, this long-running event continues to grow. In 2025, the festival drew a record crowd with approximately 175 adult anglers and 25 youth participants, proving that ice fishing remains a strong winter tradition in the region.
Just a week later, on January 24, Washington State’s largest ice fishing event returns for its fourth year. The Bonaparte Lake Ice Fishing Tournament, hosted by Bonaparte Lake Resort near Tonasket, regularly attracts more than 350 anglers. With divisions for Youth, Adult, and Multi-Species categories, along with impressive prizes and strong sponsor support, including Mack’s Lure and its staff, this tournament has quickly become a must-attend event. Anglers are also encouraged to explore nearby lakes, which offer excellent fishing opportunities throughout the season.
Rounding out the month is Operation Hardwater on January 31 at Bonaparte Lake. Sponsored by Operation Catching Freedom, this special event is designed for veterans, first responders, firefighters, and friends. More than just a fishing day, Operation Hardwater focuses on fellowship and community, bringing anglers together on the ice. Knowledgeable staff will be on hand to share techniques for catching trout and kokanee, while participants enjoy a free BBQ and giveaway items. Bonaparte Lake Resort will also be open, offering a warm place to relax and refuel during the day.
For the latest updates and additional details, please watch for upcoming announcements. One thing is certain: January is shaping up to be an unforgettable month on the ice.
