Mike Hall's Enduring Legacy on The Water

Mike Hall's Enduring Legacy on The Water

In Memory of Mike Hall: “The Professor” of the Water

The fishing world is mourning the loss of a true ambassador of the sport with the passing of Michael Kent Hall, who died on April 7, 2026, at the age of 79, following a prolonged battle with kidney disease.

From his home in Ogden, Mike built a legacy defined not only by his skill on the water but by his unwavering commitment to teaching, sharing, and uplifting others.

A Life Anchored in Fishing and Education

Mike Hall’s passion for freshwater sportfishing ran deep. Whether casting a line recreationally or collaborating with fisheries experts across Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah, he approached every opportunity with curiosity and purpose. He believed that understanding a fishery learning every nuance, every variable was the key to success.

That philosophy earned him his nickname: “The Professor.” It wasn’t just a reflection of his knowledge, but of his love for sharing it. Mike was a natural educator and speaker, someone who could connect with anyone from seasoned anglers to children holding a fishing rod for the first time. He found joy in helping others discover the outdoors and build their own connection to it.

Excellence on the Water

As a longtime Pro Staff member for Mack's Lure, Mike’s expertise translated into remarkable success. He set multiple freshwater records and became a respected figure in the angling community. Yet for all his achievements, he remained humble always more interested in helping others succeed than in highlighting his own accomplishments. He spent roughly 12 years with the Mack’s Lure Pro Staff, a role he embraced not just as a title, but as an opportunity to mentor, represent, and give back to the fishing community he loved.

A Man Defined by Generosity

Those who knew Mike speak most often not about his records, but about his character. He was kind, patient, and endlessly giving with his time. Whether on the water or off, he made people feel welcome and capable. One close friend reflected on their 12-year relationship, sharing that knowing Mike made him a better person a sentiment echoed by many. Introduced to the Mack’s Lure team by Pete Rosko, Mike quickly proved to be not just an asset but a cornerstone of the group. He had a way of leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Family and Legacy

Mike is survived by his wife, Fran; his sons, Thomas and Tyler; his daughter, Michelle; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his twin sister Maureen Brennen, his older sister Deann Ferrin, his stepfather Thomas “Bud” Myers, and his mother Helen Myers.

While his family was at the center of his life, Mike extended that same sense of care and connection to the broader fishing community. To many, he wasn’t just a mentor he was family.

A Lasting Tribute

The outpouring of remembrance from fellow anglers speaks volumes about Mike’s impact.

Bobby Loomis offered this tribute:

“Mike is in a better place now, and I will guarantee you that by the time we all meet again, he will have everything dialed in and will be teaching everyone up there how to catch ‘the First, the Most the Biggest’! He is ‘our’ family!”

It’s a fitting image Mike Hall, still teaching, still sharing, still helping others find success and joy.

The Professor’s Legacy Lives On

Mike Hall’s legacy is not measured solely in records or accolades, but in the countless lives he touched. Every angler he mentored, every child he encouraged, every conversation he shared those are the ripples that will continue long after his passing.

“The Professor” may no longer be with us on the water, but his lessons, his kindness, and his passion will endure in every cast made by those he inspired.
