Fishing, Family, and Purpose at Wallowa Lake

Cross The Divide Kokanee Derby: Where Trophy Fishing Meets Purpose

Set against the dramatic backdrop of Wallowa Lake, the Cross The Divide Kokanee Derby has quickly become one of the most meaningful and sought after fishing events in the Pacific Northwest.

Scheduled for June 19–20, 2026, this unique derby offers more than just the chance to reel in a trophy kokanee it brings together families, supports veterans, and celebrates the outdoors in one of the most scenic places in the region.

A One-of-a-Kind Fishing Experience

What makes this derby stand out begins with its location. Nestled at the base of the Eagle Cap Wilderness near Joseph, Wallowa Lake is widely regarded as a bucket-list destination for kokanee anglers. Known for producing both state and world record fish, it draws fishermen from across the country eager to test their skills on legendary waters. But the derby’s purpose runs deeper.

It’s one of the only events of its kind in the Pacific Northwest where proceeds directly support veterans and their families, helping them reconnect through outdoor experiences like hunting and fishing. That mission, combined with a prize pool featuring top-tier gearfrom premium coolers to specialized kokanee trolling setups creates an event that’s both competitive and meaningful.

Stories That Go Beyond the Catch

While big fish are always part of the story, it’s the moments behind them that define the derby. One unforgettable highlight came in 2025, when a young father just weeks into parenthood, fished alongside his own dad. Together, they not only won the event but set a new derby record with a stunning 7-pound kokanee.

Moments like that are why the derby is held each year over Father’s Day weekend. It’s about more than fishingit’s about generations connecting, traditions forming, and memories being made.

Growing Tradition, Growing Impact

Since its start in 2022, the derby has seen rapid growth. What began with just 14 boats and around 40 participants has expanded to more than 40 boats and 150 anglers, with expectations of up to 50 boats and 180 participants for 2026.

That growth has also been a boost to the local economy. Wallowa County relies heavily on tourism, and the derby brings in hundreds of visitors who stay in campgrounds, hotels, and rentals, while supporting local restaurants and businesses. It’s a community-wide benefit that extends far beyond the lake.

Behind the Scenes

Organizing an event of this scale takes months of preparation. Planning begins each January, with efforts focused on securing permits, coordinating sponsors, and assembling prize packages.

Mack’s Lure has played a key role, alongside new sponsors who help keep the event fresh each year. Thanks to an experienced volunteer base and improved registration and weigh-in systems, the derby runs more smoothly each year.

Still, one challenge remains unpredictable: the weather. Mid-June conditions on Wallowa Lake can range from calm sunshine to snow and strong winds, adding an extra layer of adventure for participants.

More Than a Competition

At its core, the Cross The Divide Kokanee Derby is about the connection between families, communities, and those who have served. Its mission is simple: bring people together to fish a beautiful lake for a remarkable species, while raising funds to help veterans enjoy the outdoors with their loved ones. For many, the event has already become a cherished tradition.

As returning participant Craig Starmer shared:

“It’s a great cause, and being able to help veterans pursue something they would enjoy. It gives my family and me something fun to look forward to and do each year in Wallowa County while meeting great like-minded people.”

Looking Ahead

With the upcoming derby set for June 19–20, 2026, excitement continues to build. Organizers aim to welcome even more families, introduce newcomers to kokanee fishing, and continue growing an event that blends recreation with purpose.

For anglers chasing their next big catch or families looking to start a new tradition the Cross The Divide Kokanee Derby offers something rare: a chance to be part of something bigger than the fish.

Mack's Lure would like to thank the Cross The Divide organization for allowing us to be apart of this event and encourage everyone in the Wallowa County to join the Cross The Divide Kokanee Derby on June 19th-20th, 2026.
