Veterans, First Responders, and Pro Anglers Come Together for Healing on the Water

On the scenic waters of Banks Lake in Eastern Washington, something far more meaningful than a great day of fishing took place. The event, called “Operation Catching Walleye,” was hosted by Operation Catching Freedom, a veteran-run nonprofit dedicated to supporting veterans, active-duty service members, and first responders through therapeutic fishing experiences.

Founded with a mission to foster healing, community, and purpose, Operation Catching Freedom provides free guided fishing trips, offering more than just the thrill of the catch. These events are a lifeline to those who’ve served, helping them find peace and connection through time spent on the water.

Operation Catching Walleye Makes a Lasting Impact

Held earlier this month, Operation Catching Walleye brought together dozens of veterans and first responders for a powerful day of fishing, healing, and camaraderie. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Banks Lake, the event proved to be a standout moment in the organization’s growing lineup of therapeutic outdoor adventures.

Leading the charge on the water were Mack's Lure Pro Staff members Chris Marcolin, Eric Bratten, and Levi Rodelo, who donated their boats, gear, and time to ensure every participant had a first-class fishing experience. From teaching techniques to helping land fish, their mentorship and support played a critical role in making the event a success.

More Than Just Fishing

Events like Operation Catching Walleye aren’t just about recreation—they’re about recovery.

With suicide rates and mental health challenges disproportionately impacting veterans and first responders, time spent outdoors, especially in the company of those who’ve walked similar paths, can be powerfully therapeutic.

“You spend a few hours on the water with people who get it, and you start to feel human again,” said one Army veteran participant. “It’s not just fishing, it’s recovery.”

Looking Ahead

With plans to expand in 2026, Operation Catching Freedom aims to bring more events like Operation Catching Walleye to waters across Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Thanks to growing support and a dedicated network of volunteers, the future looks bright and busy.
