More Than a Fishing Trip

More Than a Fishing Trip

Mark Swann's Tradition on Watauga Lake

For Mark Swann, a day on the water is about much more than chasing fish it's about creating memories that last a lifetime.

Recently, Mark and his grandson headed to Watauga Lake in Tennessee for a one-day fishing adventure. The scenic reservoir, located about an hour and a half from Mark's home, is one of their favorite destinations whenever the grandkids are out of school. Known for its rainbow, brown, and lake trout, along with healthy populations of bass and other species, Watauga offers plenty of opportunities for anglers of all ages.

Mark had hoped to connect with some of the lake's recently stocked trophy lake trout. Reports suggested anglers had been catching quality fish, but on this trip the trout simply weren't cooperating. Fortunately, the bass were willing to bite, keeping rods bent and spirits high.

As enjoyable as the fishing was, Mark says his favorite part of the trip had nothing to do with the species they caught.

"I just love watching my grandson fish," he said. "When the downrigger pops, he's all over it."

His grandson, who will soon celebrate his 12th birthday, eagerly jumps into action every time a rod fires. Mark enjoys watching him battle each fish with determination and excitement, putting everything he has into the fight before proudly bringing it to the boat. Seeing that enthusiasm is what makes every trip worthwhile.

The pair spent the day trolling with downriggers, snap weights, and side planers, relying on Mack's Lure Hum Dinger to cover water and tempt fish. Even when conditions don't produce the target species, Mark knows that time spent together is always a successful outing.

Weather also worked in their favor. After watching forecasts call for storms throughout the week, they were rewarded with a beautiful summer day. Temperatures reached the 80s with mostly sunny skies and just enough breeze to make for comfortable fishing conditions. For anyone planning a fishing trip with children or grandchildren, Mark offers simple advice: make the day about them.

"If a fish bites, let the kids grab the rod," he said. "Keep them involved and make sure they're having fun."

He believes the focus shouldn't be on who catches the biggest fish, but on keeping young anglers engaged and excited. Whether they're fighting fish, helping with the gear, or simply enjoying time on the boat, those shared experiences often spark a lifelong passion for fishing.

Trips like this one remind us that while fish may not always cooperate, memories almost always do. For Mark Swann, that's the real catch a tradition of family, fishing, and time well spent on the water that will stay with his grandson for years to come.
