Fishing for a Cause: This Wallowa Lake Event Supports Veterans
What began as a grassroots effort to support local veterans has quickly grown into one of Northeast Oregon’s most anticipated fishing events. The Cross the Divide Kokanee Derby, held annually at Wallowa Lake, was founded by Andy Marcum with a simple but powerful mission: raise money to take veterans on guided hunting and fishing trips across the region.
“I thought, what better place to do a Kokanee Derby than the lake the world record was caught on,” Marcum said. That world record—an astonishing 9-pound, 10-ounce Kokanee—was landed using a Sling Blade dodger and a Pee Wee Hoochie, both iconic offerings from Shasta Tackle. Now proudly owned by Mack’s Lure, Shasta Tackle’s legacy of producing high-quality Kokanee gear continues to thrive. Wallowa Lake remains a premier destination for trophy Kokanee and dedicated anglers.
The first year of the derby saw modest beginnings with just 14 boats and around 40 people participating. However, the event's purpose and the quality of the experience quickly gained traction. “This past year we had around 45 boats and over 150 people,” Marcum shared, highlighting just how much the derby has grown in only a few seasons.
This year’s competition didn’t disappoint. The biggest fish landed came in just shy of 7 pounds and measured 26 1/2 inches long—a testament to the quality of the lake and the skill of the anglers it attracts.
A major factor in the derby’s growing success has been the support from the broader fishing community. “We pulled off this year's event with the support and donations from Mack's Lure,” said Marcum. “They boosted our handouts and prize volume by double,” enhancing the experience for everyone involved and drawing more participants to the event.
But beyond the fishing, prizes, and record-breaking potential, the heart of the Cross the Divide Kokanee Derby lies in its purpose. Every cast made and fish caught helps fund opportunities for veterans to reconnect with nature, build community, and find healing through outdoor adventures.
As word spreads and the derby continues to grow, it’s becoming much more than just a fishing tournament—it’s a meaningful way for people to give back, one Kokanee at a time.
Andy Marcum, a lifelong resident of Enterprise, Oregon, found his calling in service early on. After graduating high school in 2005, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2006 as a Military Police Officer. He rose to the top of his class and became a K-9 Handler, working nationwide in patrol and explosive detection, including assignments with the Secret Service.
Deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 with the 3rd Battalion 5th Marines, Andy returned in 2011 with a 100% disability rating. He and his wife, Lindsey, chose to raise their four children in his hometown.
Today, Andy continues to serve Wallowa County as the Vegetation Department Manager, youth leader, and Hunting/Fishing Program Director and Guide for Cross the Divide—embodying a life of service, leadership, and community commitment.
